Sapphire Jubilee Brooch

Discovered by brothers Seemeega and Nowdluk Aqpik in 2002 near the hamlet of Kimmirut on Baffin Island, the Beluga Sapphire Property and the Aqpik Occurrence are the only known sapphire deposits to be found in Canada to date. In 2017, Hillberg & Berk acquired a rare collection of 64 Canadian sapphires mined from the deposits after being chosen by the Government of Canada to create a brooch for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to commemorate her Sapphire Jubilee and Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Inspired by the backdrop of the Canadian Arctic, the original nesting place of the sapphires, the one-of-a-kind brooch celebrates the beauty of the landscape and the one-of-a-kind nature of a snowflake. Throughout the brooch, forty-eight of the Canadian sapphires in varying sizes and shapes are set on a bed of icy Canadian diamonds held in 18K palladium.

On July 19th, 2017, Governor General David Johnston presented Her Majesty with the brooch on behalf of the people of Canada at Canada House in London, England.
